When I first saw this image I was intrigued, do we have cannon here? Turned out they were shells fired from the long gone Admiralty gunnery range. The shells are five feet long, weigh the best part of a ton and were fired from a fifteen inch gun. The gun turret was mounted on a land based moveable platform that mimicked the deck of a rolling ship. It has taken me two weeks to work this out and ended in a very interesting discussion with a guy that used to operate and look after the gun. It will soon be forgotten by most what a vital part Portland played in defence research, enough for it to be worth spying on. I bet not many remember or have even heard of Ethel Gee and the Portland spy ring. Click on the sonar image to enlarge.
